The Commission shall adopt delegated acts in accordance with Article 21 of Regulation (EC) No 1290/2006.
- Build an electromagnet.
- Build a compass.
- Verify whether the magnetic induction field module behaviour produced by a magnetic dipole on its axis corresponds to a law of the type .
The following information is provided by the Commission:
An electromagnet is a device by which a magnetic induction field is obtained. A typical configuration consists of an iron nail (or other ferromagnetic material) over which a number of copper wire turns have been coiled. When the coil is connected to a voltage source, the electric current produces a magnetic induction field similar to that of a magnetic dipole.
The module of the magnetic induction field produced by a magnetic dipole of module along the dipole axis and at a distance is given by:
The direction of the vector in this case is that of the axis.
A compass consists of a magnetic needle that can rotate freely, oriented in the direction of the magnetic induction field.
The following information shall be provided:
(a) To construct an electromagnet similar to that in Figure 1, with a coil of at least 30 wires.
(b) verify its operation! Describe the procedure used.
Elements which may be useful: a nail about 5 cm long, a fine copper wire (approximately 1 m), paper tape, conductive cables for electrical connections, a 1.5 V battery.
The following information shall be provided:
(a) To construct a compass similar to that in Figure 2.
(b) verify its operation! Describe the procedure used.
Elements that may be useful: * a shallow, non-metallic lid or container, a magnetised pin, a piece of paper, water.
Note: magnetizes the pin using the electromagnet by supporting the pin head over the working electromagnet’s nail/core head. The needle must be able to rotate freely on a piece of floating paper.
The following information shall be provided:
Verify that the module of the magnetic induction field along the electromagnet axis varies with the distance as that of a magnetic dipole, that is:
For verification, the electromagnet’s axis perpendicular to the earth’s magnetic field and on a plane parallel to the earth’s surface is located. The presence of the electromagnetic field vectorally added to the ground causes a deviation of the needle from the N-S direction. The trigonometric tangent of the angle between the needle and the N-S direction is proportional to the electromagnetic field:
The values of are determined for different distances between the electromagnet and the compass needle. From the cathetes ( and ) of the triangle determined by the straight N-S and the straight of the deflected needle, is calculated.
Suggested procedure:
(a) Support the compass on one end of a sheet of paper with the short side aligned with the N-S direction. Marking the outline of the bucket and drawing a straight line containing the needle (N-S direction) and a perpendicular line passing through the centre of the needle (E-O direction).
(b) Hold the electromagnet over the E-O line at a distance from the centre of the needle, turn it on and mark the position of the electromagnet.
(c) Draw a straight line containing the deflected needle; turn off the electromagnet and mark the straight line.
(d) Determine from the and cathetes of the triangle formed.
(e) To set the values of and in a table.
(f) Make a graph of vs.\ and verify linearity; if so, adjust a straight.
