PRIMA PARTE

The following information is provided for in the Annex to Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1303/2013.
You are asked to find graphically the relationship between the volume of water in a bottom-hole glass/container and the related drainage times.
You must measure the time of draining of the glass A filled with certain amounts of water with the time-meter. The teacher will tell you the size of the hole (light) in the A glass.
The procedure:
- Measure with the graduated cylinder a certain amount of water.
- Hold the glass hole covered with your finger, fill it with the water contained in the graduated cylinder.
- Open the hole and start the timer until the flow is continuous (stop the timer when the flow stops being continuous, that is, when it stops for the first time).
- Tap the hole again with your finger and with the syringe, suck any water residue; measure the water residue.
- Report your measurements in a table (table 1). 2) and repeat the operation several times without changing the volume flowing (expectedly at least five tries).
- Repeat the procedure by changing the initial volume. For each volume analyzed, complete a table such as the tab. 2.
Once this operation has been carried out for various water volumes:
- Complete Table 3 showing, for each volume, the volume of water actually discharged (measured volume minus residual) and the average of the discharge times with relative uncertainty.
- With the data in the tab. 3 construct a graph by ascertaining the volume and ordering the drainage time. Consider the curve to be drawn: relationships are not always linear!
The sensitivity and range of the measuring instruments used (graduated cylinder, syringe, timepiece) shall be noted in the tables.

SECONDA PARTE

The following information is provided for in Part II of Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006:
Repeat some measurements of the emptying times using the B container (whose hole is of unknown size).
- Determine the actual volume of water flowing and the relative time of drainage for at least two different volumes.
- Compare the emptying times obtained with the corresponding (by equal volume) times from your A-glass chart and report the results in Table 4.
- Fill out the last column of the tab. 4 taking into account that the drainage times are ** inversely proportional to the area of the output bore**:
where and are the bore areas and , the emptying times at the same volume of flow. This report gives the diameter of the B hole:
- Determine the size of hole B. Describe clearly how you have obtained the results.
Please answer the following questions as fully as possible:
-
What do you think are the main causes of uncertainty about the calculated measurement of the diameter of the ‘B’ hole? Explain your conclusions (compare the relative errors of each size involved, including the volume that affects the time determination using the graph).
-
Do you have any suggestions for improving the quality of the results? (For example: is it useful to use more sensitive tools? What alternative tools could improve volume measurements?)
