Physics Olympiad: Final Round 15 - 16.03.2025 Long problems Duration: 150 minutes Marks: 48 points (3 16) Start each problem on a new sheet in order to ease the correction. General hint: The problems consist of partially independent problem parts, so if you get stuck, it is a good idea to read further ahead and to continue with an easier part. Long problem 1.1: Faraday disk (16 points) A Faraday disk is a simple electrical generator. It consists of a metallic disk made of iron (a conducting meterial) with internal radius , external radius and width h. It is placed in a constant and uniform magnetic field of intensity B which is orthogonal to the disk as shown in Figure 1. Iron has conductivity . h R Figure 1: Diagram of a Faraday disk. Part A. Open circuit (5 points) First, simply consider the disk rotating with constant angular velocity , as shown in Figure 1, without the circuit shown in blue. i. (3 pts) Find the electric field inside the disk and the potential difference between the center and external circumference of the disk. Hint: Recall that in a conductor, the free charges rearrange themselves such that there is no total force on them. ii. (2 pts) What is the resistance of the disk? Part B. Generator (5 points) Now the internal and the external circumference of the disk are connected with a wire to a resistance R as shown in blue in Figure 1. The contacts do not rotate with the disk. Assume the contacts to be free of resistance and friction. i. (1 pt) What is the potential difference V between the center and external circumference of the disk? Hint: The disk behaves like a non ideal generator. ii. (1 pt) What is the total power and the electrical power P of this generator? iii. (1 pt) What is the efficiency of the generator? iv. (2 pts) Find the maximal electrical power and the efficiency of the generator when working at this power output. Part C. Regenerative braking (6 points) N of these metallic disks are used as wheels and are mechanically connected to a train. The train has a mass and an efective resistance R and each wheel has a mass . The only rotating part of the train are the wheels. Iron has conductivity , heat capacity and melting point . i. (1.5 pts) Express the kinetic energy of the train in the form as a function of given values when the wheels are rotating with angular velocity . What does correspond to? Hint: The moment of inertia of a disk of mass M, internal radius and external radius with respect to its axis is . ii. (0.5 pts) Express the kinetic energy of the train assuming that . You may assume that for the rest of part C. Part 1 - 1/20

Physics Olympiad: Final Round 15 - 16.03.2025 iii. (2 pts) Find the time evolution of . iv. (0.5 pts) How long does it take to half the velocity of the train? Suppose the train is travelling with a speed of 200 . v. (1 pt) If the train is braked by short-circuiting the center and the external circumference of the disk (so R = 0), estimate how many wheels are required so that they don’t beginning melting. vi. (0.5 pts) Is the acceleration during the braking safe for the passengers ? Take , cm, cm and cm. Part 1 - 2/20

Physics Olympiad: Final Round 15 - 16.03.2025 Long problem 1.2: Non linear optics (16 points) Non-linear optics occurs when light beams of very high intensity, usually short laser pulses, propagate through materials. Under these extreme conditions, the material can even change the wavelength of the light. The general theory is quite complex, but there are several key phenomena that can be explained using quantum mechanics. Part A. Warm up (3 points) Let’s first recall some concepts about quantum mechanics. Consider a photon of wavelength travelling through vacuum. In this part, your answers should be expressed as functions of and fundamental constants. i. (0.5 pts) Express the frequency f of the photon. ii. (0.5 pts) Express the energy of the photon. iii. (1 pt) Express the momentum of the photon. Now consider a laser that emits photons of wavelength . The power of the laser is P. iv. (1 pt) Express the number of photons emitted per second. Part B. The second harmonics (5.5 points) Now let’s study non linear optics. Consider a laser pulse of central wavelength and corresponding frequency , which is shot on a non-linear crystal. The intensity is so high that it is possible that the crystal absorbs two photons simultaneously, but then emits only one photon. Since we have a pulse, the pulse contains a whole range of frequencies or wavelengths. i. (1.5 pts) Using conservation of energy, express the central frequency and of the emitted photon. ii. (1 pt) Assuming the pulse has a duration , what is the corresponding minimal spectral width of the pulse? Hint: Use Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle iii. (0.5 pts) Express the smallest and largest frequencies within the bandwidth (i.e. the interval of possible frequencies). iv. (1.5 pts) Since two photons of different frequencies can be absorbed simultaneously and a new photon with their total energy can be emitted, a pulse around with a certain bandwidth is created. Calculate this bandwidth . Assume that the original pulse consists only of photons with frequencies in the range to . v. (1 pt) Express the duration of the new pulse. Comment on the result. Part C. Momentum conservation (7.5 points) So far, only conservation of energy has been considered. However, momentum should also be conserved. For this, the refractive index must be taken into account. In general, the refractive index is wavelength dependent (the relation is called dispersion). Assume that the refractive index of the crystal of the original laser pulse has a value (constant over the whole spectral width ) and analogously is the refractive index of the same crystal for the new pulse of wavelength . In this whole part, assume that the incident pulse hits the crystal perpendicular to its surface, so according to Snell’s law, the pul
