Problema teorico n. 1 — Conduzione a “Ping-Pong”

Problema teorico n. 1 Driving at “Ping-Pong”

A flat capacitor has circular frames, with a radius and separated by a distance , with , as shown in Figure 1. 1.1(a). The upper plate is kept at an electrical potential , constant, while the lower plate is grounded. Next a thin, small disk, with a mass of , radius () and thickness (), is supported in the centre of the lower plate, as shown in Fig. 1.1(b).

The vacuum between the plates is made, which has a dielectric constant ; both the plates and the disc are perfect conductors; all effects at the edges of an electrostatic nature can be neglected. The inductance of the entire circuit and the relativistic effects can certainly be ignored. The distortion effects on the electric field produced by the charge on the disc can also be neglected.

**(a) ** [1.2 points] Before inserting the disc into the capacitor, calculate the electrostatic force between the plate, which are spaced between them , as shown in Fig. 1.1(a).

**(b) ** [0.8 points] After the disc has been rested above the bottom plate, the electrical charge that goes on the disc in Fig. 1.1(b) depends on the electrical potential according to the ratio. Esprimere in funzione di , ed .

**(c) ** [0.5 points] The parallel plates of the capacitor lie perpendicular to a uniform gravitational field of intensity. To lift the disc, initially stationary, the electric potential applied to the upper plate must be increased beyond a threshold value . Ricavare in funzione di , , e .

*(d) ** [2.3 points] In the case of , the disc shall make an up-and-down motion between the two plates. (Assuming that the disc moves only vertically * without any lateral oscillation.) The impacts between the disc and the plates are anelastic and are characterized by a return coefficient , where and are the disc speeds immediately before and immediately after the single impact respectively. The plates shall be fixed in their positions. The speed of the disc * immediately after * the lower plate impact reaches a value characteristic of a ‘stationary state’ and depends on as follows: The coefficients and are expressed as a function of , , , and . Assume that the entire surface of the disc touches the plate uniformly and simultaneously so that in each collision the full charge exchange occurs instantaneously.

**(e) ** [2.2 points] After the system has reached the stationary state, the time-mediated electric current, , flowing through the capacitor plates can be approximated by the ratio , in which case . The coefficient is expressed as a function of , , and .

**(f) ** [3 points] When the applied electrical potential is decreased (extremely slowly), there is a critical value of the potential, , below which the electrical charge will stop flowing through the plates. Express and the corresponding electric current as a function of , , , and . By comparing with the value discussed in (c) of the electric potential threshold for the disc’s rise, , draw an approximate graph of the characteristic function -, where was first increased and then decreased in the range between and .
