A B Fig. 1 h = 2 l1 l2 l1 C Estany de Sant Maurici i Els Encantats

These ropes must withstand high loads, be Lightweight and flexible, resistant to rust and cutting, stable with temperature… And they have to be elastic, that is, extensible. Figure 1 shows a climber which has reached the C-point of a wall after completing a long of its The rope. The protection the rope provides the climber is to stop it from falling, that is, to convert its energy mechanics in elasticity, extending the rope a certain length x, as if it were a dock. This model physical string dock is valid as long as the extension x is included in the interval e x x 0 , where Ex is the so-called elastic limit. The International Union of Alpine Associations (UIAA) calls for the the rope manufacturers who, at most, 08 ,0 /

L xe , i.e. ex must not exceed 8% of L. For extensions exceeding The former string model dock is no longer working. The tension is not proportional to the length but takes a maximum value, m F, which remains almost constant until, For elongations of the order of 50%, the rope is broken (breaking limit, L xr 5,0 ). The value of this maximum voltage, m F, also required by the IAEA: it must not exceed 1200 days for The standard strings (1 daN = 1 deNewton = 10 N). The whole process is summarized in the graph in Figure 2, which idealizes the the voltage of a standard wire according to its unit length, L x / . In the range of extensions r e x x x The behavior of the string has an important The deformation is not elastic but plastic, i.e. the deformation achieved within this The interval is permanent, it does not disappear when the tension stops.
