  • em a): não houve precisão nem exatidão, pois todos os tiros acertaram pontos distantes do centro do alvo e entre si;
  • em b): houve precisão, pois os tiros acertaram pontos bem próximos uns dos outros, mas não houve exatidão, pois os pontos estão distantes do centro;
  • em c): houve uma boa exatidão (tiros próximos ao centro), mas a precisão não foi tão boa, pois os tiros acertaram pontos distantes entre si;

  • in a): non vi è stata precisione o accuratezza, poiché tutti i colpi hanno colpito punti lontani dal centro del bersaglio e tra loro;
  • in b): la precisione è stata raggiunta perché i colpi hanno colpito punti molto vicini l’uno all’altro, ma non è stata accurata perché i punti sono lontani dal centro;
  • in c): si è verificato un’ottima precisione (tirate vicino al centro), ma non è stata così buona, poiché i tirati hanno raggiunto punti distanti tra loro;

  1. For the purpose of calculation, we work with all the numbers available in the instrument, but the final representation must always follow the above rules.

B.3. Propagation of errors in a mathematical calculation

When we get any experimental measurement, we’ll always have the implication of measurement error. When we calculate with these measures, there will be a spread of these errors and the result must also be represented by an error.

If we have two measurements of the type, , and , and we perform any mathematical operation, the resulting will also have an error . The error value can be obtained by the equation:

where is the partial derivative of the function with respect to the variable ( corresponds to or in expression B14).

For a quick and simplified calculation, we present in Table B-1 a list of formulas for more common operations.

B.4. Accuracy and accuracy of measures

Accuracy indicates how close the measures are to each other. Accuracy indicates how close the experimentally measured value is to the actual or expected or reference value. A way to graphically represent the concepts of precision and accuracy is shown by the example of the “shot to target” where a shooter wants to hit the center of the same, which is equivalent to the reference value. In Figure B-2 you can see the possible situations:

  • in a): there was no accuracy or accuracy, as all the shots hit points distant from the centre of the target and each other;
  • in (b): there was precision, as the shots hit points very close to each other, but there was no precision, as the points are far from the centre;
  • in c): there was good accuracy (shoots close to the centre), but the accuracy was not so good because the shots hit distant points from each other;
  • in d): there was accuracy and precision, as the shots hit points very close to the centre and also close to each other.

(a) Imprecise and inaccurate (b) Necessary but inaccurate (c) Exact but inaccurate (d) Necessary and accurate

Figure B-2: Graphical representation of the concepts of precision and accuracy.

We can quantify the accuracy of a measurement , which has an uncertainty , by the expression:

The lower the value obtained with B15, the greater the accuracy of the measurement.

If a parameter has a reference value , but the value has been experimentally obtained, the accuracy of the measurement can be obtained by the expression:

In general, we can use the expressions B15 and B16 together with the uncertainty of a given measure to say whether it was good or bad.

B.5. Uncertainties of measuring instruments

In general, the uncertainty of a measurement is proportional to the scale of the measuring instrument. By default, the value corresponding to half the smallest division of the instrument is assumed to be uncertain at the measure. In cases where the instrument is unreliable or the scale is difficult to read, the value corresponding to the smallest division of the instrument may be considered as uncertainty.
