The moon of Galileo
On the first day of the MSK1 Dialogue, Galileo countered the idea that the Moon’s surface is reflective (third) like a mirror, stating that in that case the Moon should appear dark and not clear. He says Salviati:
As the Moon is certainly the Earth in the figure, which is undoubtedly spherical, as is necessarily the case, we conclude from seeing its perfectly circular disc. Secondly, it is, like the Earth, dark and opaque in itself, for which opacity is apt to receive and re-impact the light of the Sun, which, if it were not so, it could not do.
[…]
We are trying, Mr Simplicio, to see if to make a reflection of light similar to that which comes to us from the Moon, it is necessary that the surface from which the reflection comes is as flat and smooth as that of a mirror, or else a surface not flat and smooth but rough and poorly clean is more accommodated. Now, when we have two reflections, one more shiny and the other less, from two opposite surfaces, I ask you, which of the two surfaces do you think is the clearest to our eyes and the darker one?
It is therefore assumed that the surface of the Moon is perfectly spherical and reflective like a mirror; it is assumed that during the full moon phase that is, when the Sun, Earth and Moon are approximately aligned in this order looking at the Moon you would see the virtual image of the Sun, produced by a spherical mirror.
What would the angle diameter of the (virtual) image of the Sun produced by the Moon be for a terrestrial observer in this situation?
If we estimate what portion of the moon’s surface would appear bright when viewed from Earth at the time of the full moon, how would a terrestrial observer view the moon?
The scale of stellar magnitudes historically linked to the first classification made by Ptolemy is a logarithmic function of the light flow collected by the detector; more precisely:
where is the reference magnitude of a star whose luminous flux is ; note that the more luminous an object is the less the magnitude it can assume, hence also negative values; note also that the difference between the magnitudes of two objects is related to the inverse ratio of their luminous flows. So while Vega ( Lyrae) has a magnitude of about 0, the brightest star after the Sun (Sirio, Canis minoris) has a magnitude of , Venus can reach a magnitude of and the Sun has a magnitude (integrated*) .
3. Calculate the integrated magnitude of the Moon always assuming that its surface is perfectly spherical and reflective, treating the virtual image of the Sun as a source that emits the same amount of light in each direction (i.e. isotropic).
In fact, the Moon’s integrated magnitude is greater than the one above because light is partly absorbed. In the case of the Moon, it should also be noted that the surface does not diffuse sunlight evenly (isotropically), so that at full moon the surface appears about 6 times brighter than average.
In astronomy, an opaque body (planet, satellite, asteroid…) is called an albedo, or an albedo, the fraction of incident light that is not absorbed by the surface. If the absorption in the visible is independent of wavelength, as is the case with the Moon, a surface illuminated by the Sun appears white when its albedo is equal to one, light gray, medium, dark, when the albedo is decreasing, until black when the albedo is equal to zero.
4. In the above assumptions, knowing that the integrated magnitude of the Moon at full moon is equal to , estimate its albedo and tell what color the lunar surface is.
Data: Earth-Moon Distance , equal to approximately of Earth-Sun distance; apparent angular diameter of the Sun and Moon as seen from Earth (are approximately equal): .
For extended sources the integrated magnitude is that which would have a point source that emits the same amount of light.
The Commission has also adopted a proposal for a new Directive on the protection of the environment.

The following table shows the results of the tests:
A perfectly collimated beam of light with a diameter of hits a flat plate of glass of thickness at an angle of incidence of from the air, and undergoes refraction whereby it propagates into the glass at an angle of refraction . The refractive index of the glass depends on the wavelength of the radiation in the vacuum according to the report:

If the beam of light comes from a wavelength argon laser in the vacuum , the refractive index of the glass is , whereas using a wavelength semiconductor laser in the vacuum , the refractive index of the glass is .
In the case of argon lasers, calculate the wavelength, propagation rate and frequency of the radiation in the glass.
A white beam of light with the same geometric characteristics but wavelength in the vacuum between and is then used instead of the lasers. The radiation then scatters, and after passing through the thickness of the plate emerges into an elongated shape area.
Find the refractive index of the glass at both ends, red and violet, of the white radiation.
3. Calculate the distance between the centre points where after the sheet red and violet light emerge; what is the maximum size of the elongated area that receives light on the back surface of the sheet?
An observer making sure that there is no risk (*) wants to examine the propagation of light by placing the pupil of an eye exactly on the axis (a) of the beam reflected from the first surface; (b) of the beam transmitted by the plate; (c) of the beam that emerges from the plate from the same side of the source, after reflecting on the second surface of the plate.

In the same three cases, say whether, while always keeping the pupil of the eye at the exact centre of the beams, some variation in colour is observed depending on whether the pupil is adapted to low light (diameter about ) or to high light (diameter about ). The answers are justified in individual cases.

The Lithium atom is a chemical element. The following table shows the results of the tests:
Studies on the structure of matter in the late 19th century showed that an atom contains a certain number of electrons equal to about half its atomic weight . Furthermore, as an atom is electrically neutral, it must contain positive charges equal to negative charges. From the typical density values of solids, atomic weight and Avogadro’s number, the size of the atomic radius could be estimated.
Between the eighth and ninth centuries, the debate over atomic structure centered on the question of the distribution of electric charges in an atom. J. J. Thomson proposed a model of the atom in which electrons, point shaped and negatively charged, are located within a continuous positive charge distribution having a spherical shape of radius equal to the atomic radius. Because of their mutual repulsion, electrons are distributed within the atom in different positions. In the fundamental state the electrons are stationary in their equilibrium position.
The predictions of this model have been confirmed only in a limited set of experimental facts, however the historical and exemplary value of the model makes it interesting enough to be treated in an electrostatic problem.
According to Thomson’s model, a lithium atom has 3 electrons immersed in a homogeneous charge sphere with a total charge equal to that of the electrons, but of the opposite sign, so that the atom is neutral.
The lithium density is , the mass of a mole of lithium is . A reasonable estimate of the size of the lithium atom is obtained by considering that each atom has the space of a cubic cell whose spindle gives the diameter of the atomic sphere. Assuming this, estimate the radius of a lithium atom.
2. Find the electric field trend and potential of a spherical positive charge distribution, total value and radius , at all points in space. Assess its distance and plot the field module and potential graphs in terms of the distance from the centre of the sphere.
Calculate, according to Thomson’s model, how far from the center of positive distribution are the lithium electrons in the two possible equilibrium states and when the atom is ionized once. For the calculations, the radius of the homogeneous charge distribution is assumed to be the same for the neutral atom and the ion.
4. Determine how much energy has been supplied to the lithium atom to ionize it once it has started from the state with the electrons equidistant from each other (lower total energy configuration).
It is assumed that a known energy has been spent to form the positive charge sphere, the numerical value of which, if necessary, is calculated using the ratio:
